Yup! Another trip to the ER! You know how we like to keep up traditions and all. September 18, 2007, Jacob had a high fever. September 22, 2008, Jacob suddenly loses equilibrium and can't stand up on his own. September 16, 2009, Aaron finally takes one for the team!
Yesterday I was feeling super tired and laid down in bed after Aaron got home from work. Aaron took the boys outside to play and at about 5pm he knocks on the window and asked me where your appendix is located, because he is having severe pain on his left side. I went outside to watch the boys and told him to go inside, drink some water and lay down. I checked on him a few minutes later and he said that the pain is only getting worse and he thinks we need to head to the hospital. So, I send a quick text to my MIL asking if she could meet us at the hospital in 30 minutes to watch the boys and I throw them in the car, grab them some quick drinks and jammies. Meanwhile, Aaron starts making calls to his coworkers for coverage because he is on call. Finally we head on our way. Aaron was acting like a woman in labor trying to breath through the pain and dreading every single turn and bump. Aaron's mom texted me back on the way saying that she had a seminar until 7:30 and asked if I was ok, so I forwarded the same text asking to meet at the hospital in 30mins to my mom hoping she would get it (they were going to a dinner at the church). I dropped Aaron off at the door and thankfully, mom got the text in time and met us at the ER before I was even able to pull into a parking spot and took the boys to church with her.
They took Aaron right back and immediately began saying "kidney stone". They took blood and urine and got his iv started with fluids and pain meds and by 7pm he was finally feeling better. Once he was comfortable, they took him for a CT scan where they confirmed it was a kidney stone or "the man's way of experiencing childbirth". While Aaron was getting his CT scan done, I ran outside to update the family. Aaron's mom dropped everything when she learned that it was a "real emergency" and we didn't just need a babysitter for "some sort of OB appointment or baby related thing". I try not to say anything negative about many people on here, especially the in laws, since I plan on printing these entries out into a book for the boys someday, but I gotta say I was ticked (they don't know/read this blog). I kept my lips sealed, but I wanted to let her know that THANK GOD it was Aaron and not "just a baby related thing" because at 24wks anything baby related that takes place urgently at the hospital is not.a.good.thing. And even if there was question in her mind to the potential severity of our trip to the hospital, shouldn't you call? No reaction about this from Aaron, of course. She was helpful though because my mom was still feeding the boys and getting them in their jammies when we were released, so we were able to have Aaron's mom drive us to the pharmacy to pick up the pain meds and to Olive Garden for dinner to go. Then we met my mom and the boys and headed home.
Aaron is feeling pretty good now, but he's on pain meds round the clock until it passes... let's hope sooner than later. The bad news is that it's pretty likely that he will have more stones throughout his lifetime :(.
I'm dreading September, 2010 already...

If it's any consolation, Dan had a few kidney stones awhile back -- it must be more that two years ago now because it was before Sean was born -- and he hasn't had any since. There are things you can do to avoid them (I can't remember what they are, but it has something to do with lemon juice, LOL), so you may wanna look into that. Unfortunately though, it's true: once you've had them, you become "prone" to them. But like I said, Dan's been able to avoid them pretty good.
Danielle,
I am emailing you diet info. Kidney stones have a core of oxalate so a diet low in oxalate helps decrease the chances of them coming back. It's a weird diet but definitely worth it. I hear they hurt BAD!! Let me know if you have more questions!!

Geez Louise! If it's not one thing, it's another! You deserve a slow, quiet winter! Hope Aaron's doing better and Jacob is liking p.s. How often do you have to 'work' it?
