Jacob loves bathtime

So not too much is new around here, so I thought I would just give you a lowdown on Jacob's current likes and dislikes:

• He loves bathtime, but he really likes to stand in the bath (standing in the bath goes on my checklist as a dislike)


• He loves pop/beer cans and bottles (another item for my dislike list... especially when Jacob grabs and spills an OPEN pop on new carpet)


• He loves getting into cupboards


• He loves Roxy and Autumn (Autumn does NOT like Jacob, Roxy loves Jacob)


• He loves to stick his tongue out when we go outside (even if it's not snowing)


• He is really into flipping through (and eating) books


• He loves nursing


• He loves riding on shoulders or being lightly tossed in the air


• He just loves his momma and daddy


• Oh yeah, and of course, he is STILL completely obsessed with COWS

Dislikes:

• Having his diaper changed or getting dressed


• Having his face cleaned off


• Any sort of delay in feeding, as soon as hunger strikes HE MUST EAT NOW!!


• Getting his fingers pinched after he gets into the cupboards

He is really a happy, healthy baby. We have been so lucky, now if we could only get him to sleep all the way through the night...

Roxy Needs Attention too.

Roxy must have been a little jealous that Jacob got all the attention yesterday and needed to create a little excitement of her own. She thought a good way to do that would be to run after some geese on the pond and break through the thin ice. She was about 20ft from the shore and her whole body went all the way under. Aaron was with her at the time and said that Roxy came up with the biggest "Oh shit!" look on her face. The pond is only about chest deep at it's deepest point, so Aaron tried to stomp through the thin ice and walk out into the cold water to get her thinking the whole time "I'm going to be one of those idiots who die trying to save their dog", but nonetheless still going out after her. Miraculously, Roxy kept attempting to swim back to shore and was able to climb back up on the ice and back to Aaron (who was only about knee deep at this point). She shook vigorously, then ran to a big open area and rolled in the snow. So by the time I saw her, she looked like a big snow ball.

We're Home!

Yeah! It's finally over. I'll never have to listen to someone call my kid Shrek again. Everything went perfectly smooth. The eating issue wasn't as big of a concern as I thought it was going to be. We were allowed to feed Jacob breast milk up until 3hrs before arrival time, so we set an alarm clock for 2:45 and gave him one quick feeding before his fasting, then he slept all the way until we arrived at the hospital and they called us back to the pre-op area to prep him. He was a little fussy during the poking and prodding, but overall very content! My coworkers wife was our pre-op nurse and I think that helped lighten things up a bit. Our doctor made me a little bit concerned because he kept bumping into things in are room and I was thinking "I hope you are a little more steady during the procedure...", but he is a really nice guy and I think he did a good job. My other big fear was Jacob being scared when they took him away and luckily that went well too, the anesthesiologist (who also has an infant at home) just picked him up and Jacob just looked straight ahead like "where are we going, doc?" and he didn't cry or reach for us at all. I still cried, but I managed to hold it back until he was actually out of sight. I don't know HOW I did that well, even. So then we waited just about 15-20minutes and the doc came back out and said that things went great and Jacob will be much more aerodynamic now and that the nurse will come get us when he wakes up. So then we waited and waited and waited and finally saw the our doctor again and I think he could tell we were getting very impatient because he asked if we had seen him yet and when we told him no, he stepped away and came right back for us and brought us to the recovery area. Jacob was a little out of it, but he recognized us right away and had a big smile. The incision area looks much better than I expected it to, in fact the doctor even made the comment that his ears look better than his nose! Despite the quick procedure, Jacob DID have to have the whole iv and breathing tube thing. And, the doctor did have to remove cartilage. So then Jacob ate a little bit and we hit the road. We are now home and Jacob is (so far) acting like nothing even happened, he is crawling around, playful and eating.

Bruises Happen

Jacob got his first big bruise on Sunday. Poor kid was having such a rough day and he slipped while trying to climb the tv stand and nailed the bridge of his nose. Now, as you can see, he has a lovely bruise, just in time for our hospital visit... I'm sure that lovely tidbit will make way to his chart and protective services will be at our home sometime next week, lol. Hope it doesn't work that way!!!

Oh, and I also discovered that I CAN make the blog private so that only the email addresses I provide can view it. I will work on that someday. Of course, nothing on the internet is really private, but I will probably do it anyway.

Snowed in!

Pretty much my only complaint with living at the hatchery is the long drive into Traverse City. It's not that far, but 30 miles can seem like forever when you have snowy roads and poor visibility. So, Sunday night I got spooked by the radar and the reports of the coming storm and packed up the sleeping baby at 10:00 p.m. to head to Grandma's. It's really nice that we have that as an option, not many people can just go stay the night at their daycare providers home to avoid driving on bad roads the following day. We ended up staying two nights and I am glad I did, I really missed Aaron, but the roads were bad and it's just not worth it having Jacob in the car and all. Jacob enjoyed his extended stay at Grandma's house because that means he gets to sleep ALL night with Mommy! He was so comfortable, that he peed right through his diaper both nights. Aaron has had a few nights where he was r e a l l y comfortable like that after a few beers... ha ha ha, don't tell him I said that... Anyways, I think he was sick of Grandma's by this evening though because the report I got when I picked him up was that he was "grouchy". I think he just needed a change of environment and he missed his daddy. Since we have been home, he has only wanted to be held by dad, it's really sweet! It's becoming very apparent that he really does miss us when we are gone. It's going to make it hard to go to Chicago in a couple weeks! Dad can Handle it, though. Can mom.... ;)

Houston, we have a tooth!

Jacob is 7.5months old and yesterday we finally had a tooth break through! Jacob refuses to cooperate with any sort of oral examination by mommy, so unfortunately I was unable to actually get a photo of it... you will have to take my word for it! I have a feeling he is going to be a nightmare when it comes time to visit a dentist, but we have awhile before we need to worry about that.

Not too much else going on, we have a big day coming up on Thursday. Jacob will be having his little skin tags surgically removed. I am so worried about it, but eager to get it over with. We will keep you posted.

Our Secret Public Journal

I've wanted to start a blog for awhile now, but I am still hesitant because I think it's kind of difficult to find a balance between writing something personal, yet public. So we will see how it goes! I'm just going to have to remember not to vent too much about my job, etc. Any Bob & Tom Fans out there are probably familiar with a comedian that does a 'Secret Public Journal' bit on the Bob and Tom Morning show. It always cracks me up and I can't help but think of that as I am writing this.

Anyways, it seems that now that I am trying to juggle working full time and being a wife and mother, I am having a hard time keeping up on email, so I thought this would be a good way to keep friends and family updated on the latest of Life on the Hatchery!

So, sorry for being distant via email. I'll do my best to keep this updated. And please, leave comments for us!
