Brody's 1st run at Crystal Mtn.

Photo and video editing at www.OneTrueMedia.com

Last Wednesday we met up with Jacob's old preschool class for their skiing field trip to Crystal Mountain. (Only in Northern Michigan would you find a preschool brave enough to take 14 three and four year olds skiing, right?!...) Surprisingly it wasn't as chaotic as I thought and ALL of those kiddos did great! Jacob did great snowboarding, too and showed his friends his new ollie trick and how he can get started all on his own. I didn't get any videos of Jacob boarding because Brody was a HANDFUL! He kept trying to go up the magic carpet, walk over to the chairlift, play with the cones the kids were skiing around, etc. He was a little difficult to manage since I already had Austin strapped to my chest (under my coat) in the bjorn. Anyways, it was nice to see Jacob's old preschool class, but it solidified how thankful I am that we are at the new school now because despite how friendly people were the people at his new school are just over the top welcoming.

Notice anything funny about this picture?

How about this one? Perhaps a 26lb, red-headed stinker?
Austin, showing off his muscles.

Sometimes I share Austin with Aaron. Here was one of those rare moments.

Well, we are about 3 weeks in to being a family of five and things are going pretty good. Austin has been awesome, he is such a sweet little guy. He occasionally has some fussy periods when I think he has a few tummy bubbles that are bothering him, but thankfully it's not too often. His umbilical cord stump fell off last week and Jacob said "Mom, Austin has a belly button!" As of last Thursday (2wks, 1 day) Austin was up to 10lbs 2oz! Gaining weight well, but thankfully not as well as Brody did... I want my last baby to stay a baby longer than Brody did (but still be healthy ;) ). Speaking of weight, as of that same date, I am down 27lbs (I think total weight gain was 26lbs)! I'm cautiously excited... with Brody I lost all the pregnancy pounds in a quick time and then a week later I was up 10lbs again (and never lost it!)... so we'll see and beyond that I need to lose a bunch of non-pregnancy weight anyway!

Brody has adjusted just fine to being my 'older baby'. He always wants to know where the baby is, but leaves Austin alone for the most part now. I still (and for a loooong time) will have to be very careful that I don't leave Austin anywhere vulnerable, but I'm kind of used to that now.

Then there is Jacob. I underestimated how hard the change would be on Jacob. We've had a few issues with Jacob acting out lately. Our 'issues' involve him hurting Brody for no reason, knocking over glasses of water on purpose and having potty accidents, to name a few. The good news is that he has been a great brother to Austin and hasn't taken out any of his frustrations on him. I'm sure it will get better with time and more routine with Aaron picking up his regular work schedule and Jacob understanding when/how often he goes to school.

Speaking of school, it's going really well. Seems like we've spent a lot of time there in the short amount of time that we've been members... I had a 2hr meeting with the membership guidelines lady a week ago, we all had an hour long meeting with the teacher last Thursday, Aaron and I had a 2hr parent education meeting there last Thursday, Jacob had school Friday and then we spent another 2+hrs there last night helping out with the monthly clean (just a once a year commitment, so we wanted to get it out of the way). Might as well jump right in, eh? Especially since we are joining mid-year. It's crazy to think we'll probably be spending the next six years there! Hopefully we like it! I worry it's not academic enough, but everybody there seems to LOVE it and many have older children so they must think it has prepared their other children enough kindergarten. Jacob's first day went great. They have a drop off and pick up system that is super convenient for me so I don't have to haul three kids in and out and through the snow! I wasn't sure if Jacob would be ready for it or not on his first day though, but when I asked him which he preferred he said he wanted to be dropped off! It went great and he looked like such a big boy waiting in line for me to work my way through the line of cars. I was confident that he enjoyed his day there when on the way home he asked me what we were doing tomorrow and I said "nothing, what do you want to do?" and he replied "Go back to school!" :) That alone makes me love his new school... but I also love that it is in town, so it gave the little boys and I an opportunity to do a little shopping at the mall. The boys did great and it was fun to get out of the house for a bit. I think Fridays are going to be my favorite day of the week :)

PS - I just noticed that the 14th was my three year blog anniversary! Wow, did that go fast! I really need to work on putting this into book form for the boys... maybe this summer.

New Tricks

Sunday, January 10, 2010

A few more pics of my angel. He is such a dream baby... last night we even got some 4 hour stretches of sleep! We meaning Austin and I... Aaron gets nice 8 hour stretches every night... but he gets up with the big boys and Austin and I get to sleep in all morning ;) Oh, and the little guys umbilical cord fell off last night - yeah! Glad we don't have to watch out for that anymore...

Jacob Tales

Jacob has been cracking me up lately. The first funny story I have is about breastfeeding. Even though Jacob and Brody were both breastfed about a year, Jacob doesn't have much recollection of it and was quite surprised the first time he saw me feed Austin. He asked me what Austin was doing and I informed him he was eating and that was how he drinks mommy's milk. He then replied "And you have another one! What do you have in that one?" I told him the right one had juice in it ;)

My other funny story is that Austin has already started the brotherly rivalries off. He peed on Jacob. I was changing Austin when we had a typical encounter of random spraying (gotta love those newborn boys...) as I was reaching for cover, Jacob was hit with enemy fire. Poor innocent bystander was pretty far away too but still within Austin's reach. I tried to explain to Austin that BRODY is the one you are going to battle with, most likely Jacob will be his little protector. The good news is that Jacob thought it was hilarious ;)

My last Jacob story... Aaron recently made the mistake of telling Jacob that he needs to eat all of his food at meal time so that he can grow big and strong. The result? After every meal and snack Jacob says "See how big I am?" and insists that we check to see if he has grown. Unfortunately it has not improved his eating habits much, but it makes me smile every time he does it.

And then for a final Jacob update, Jacob will be starting a new preschool next week. We received a call from the school that I wanted him to be in this year that they had an opening and Jacob's name was first on the list. While I originally was going to keep Jacob out of school this winter for a few reasons (less exposure to cold/flu for the new baby, less travel on bad roads, etc) we decided to put him in the Friday morning class because it will hopefully solidify his spot in their 4 year old program for next year. The enrollment is based on membership status with current members taking priority, then previous members, then new members. I'm slightly worried about all the changes for my little guy with new baby, new school, new teacher, new friends but I'm hoping for the best.

The latest

Things are going great here! Well, as good as expected for having a newborn anyway! I could use some more sleep and could shower a little more often, but other than that it's going great ;) I can't believe the little guy is 8 days old already :( I feel like he is already looking different and losing that delicious newborn baby smell! I took his weight this morning (love the scale, Deb!) and he is already up to 9lbs 10oz! I've felt great the last two days. My worst days were Sunday and Monday when suddenly it felt like I had been hit by a truck and my pelvis in particular ached really bad (which I don't remember that happening with the other two). Aaron has been going in to work every day this week for a couple hours (except Wednesday when he worked at his parents house, helping his dad out) and tomorrow he has the entire day off. My mom has helped out most days when Aaron has gone to work, so that has been helpful. Tomorrow I have an appointment to get photos done for a birth announcement/holiday card. I *hope* to get at least one good one of Austin and one good one of all three boys... fingers crossed!

Today was kind of a rough day for me on the mommy scale. I caused pain to all three of my kids. First off, I tried to trim Austin's fingernails. I have them covered up 24/7 so he can't scratch his little face, but I figured that tomorrow he will probably be mostly naked for some of his newborn shots so I better file down some of his sharp little nails. Well, the file didn't work so well so I thought I would try the clippers. His left hand was perfect. His right hand... ugh, notsomuch. I totally clipped his fingertip and it bled and I cried. Thank GOD he didn't cry, but I still feel terrible. I've since decided that Austin will have his hands covered for at least the next year, maybe longer. I'm not trying THAT again.

Next up: Jacob. Jacob never received his seasonal flu shot because they ran out the day before his appointment and then they were all back-ordered by the manufacturer with the rush to get the h1n1 vaccine out. I'm terrified of having a newborn during the cold/flu season and him getting sick so I wanted to make sure we are as protected as we can be. So I called this week and they had them back in supply, so we made the appointment. It was a difficult experience because Jacob is so aware of what is going on... it's way easier to deliberately cause pain to the younger ones! Jacob was a trooper though and didn't even cry, but I could tell he wanted to.

Finally, it was Brody's turn. Brody's hair suddenly grew like crazy over the past two weeks and since we are doing photos tomorrow, I wanted him to have a little trim. I think Brody was the most offended by the rough experiences today. He fought and cried and said "ALL DONE" at least a dozen times. I don't know HOW the stylist avoided cutting an ear or something, but thankfully she didn't actually cause him any physical pain. Despite that, my dramatic little guy still had the biggest reaction to the trauma.

Austin's Birth Story

Just as with Brody, we decided to induce with baby Austin. My ob informed me that babies typically get bigger each time around and since Jacob had shoulder dystocia, she didn't want to take chances with Brody. While Brody came out a bigger baby than Jacob with no problems, our ob still recommended it for Austin because our chances of having a successful induction were high (since we had a previous successful one, I believe) and to spare another 1/2 lb of weight on the baby and me. I totally expected Austin's birth to go exactly like Brody's except a tad shorter. With Brody it was:

7:00am - Arrive at hospital
8:30am - cytotec inserted, 1-2cm and 50% effaced
1:30pm - Doctor broke water, 1-2cm and 60-70% effaced
3:30pm - Rec'd Epidural
5:50pm - Fully dilated & complete!
6:00pm - started pushing
6:11pm - Brody was born

Austin wanted to let me know that he was his own person right from the start though. Here is how his birth went...

We arrived at the hospital at 7:30am and figured it would be a slow process, so I took my time changing into my gown and we took some last minute belly photos and checked out the little bassinet that our baby would soon be sleeping in and laughed at how tiny the diapers looked. I then changed and as our nurse walked in, so did my doctor ready to get things started. She had an early morning delivery, so she was there much sooner than we expected. She put in the cytotec and said she would be back at lunch to check my progress. The nurse then started my paperwork and got me hooked on the monitors. The new policy with cytotec is that I need to be administered for 4 solid hours, so we just chilled in the room and watched some old 30 Rock episodes on the laptop and browsed the internet. The nurse also called up iv therapy to place my iv since I told her it is always a huge ordeal and delayed my epidural a lot last time. Thankfully, the iv was placed easily on the first try this time around! I had a few contractions, but nothing regular or strong. My nurse started my iv fluids around 12 noon in preparation for my epidural, thinking that things might start moving after my next exam. Around 2:00pm the doctor returned and I was discouraged when she checked me and said I had no progress since the morning. At that point I was thinking all sorts of things like was I going to progress at all or would they send me home and try again another day? Was Austin going to be a NYE baby after all? And my worst fear, were we going to end up needing a C-section. Dr. Myers put in another dose of cytotec and said she would see me around dinner time. I initially had a pretty good pattern of contractions going, but they slowed down again and then got more consistent and strong towards 5:30pm. They weren't terrible, but a few I had to breath through. At 5:35pm, Dr. Myers returned and checked me again. This time I was 3cm and 60% effaced and she broke my water. This entire exam hurt like hell. I started crying at this point and didn't stop until Austin was born... it was a L O N G hour and 11 minutes! I instantly had horrible contractions right on top of each other and then shortly after she broke my water I felt something (an arm maybe?) dislodge and then Austin moved into place and it was excruciating! The nurse was like "let me know when you want your epidural" and I was just shaking my head not able to say much else! Our nurse was really awesome and seemed like she was working as quickly as she could to set up for my epidural, but it still took forever. She kept saying things like "I'm ordering your meds now.. I'm setting up the table now... I just paged the anesthesiologist...". Finally the anesthesiologist arrived, but I knew I would feel worse before I would start to feel better since I would then have to be hunched over for my contractions while he poked my back. The anesthesiologist seemed nice and sympathetic and seemed like he was working as fast as he could as he asked me the initial questions and prepped my back. At one point, I realized it must have been 6:30 pm because I could hear the music for "The Office" on the tv and I was thinking shoot, I meant to have Aaron turn that off because I didn't want anyone poking needles in my back to be distracted by anything! A few moments later he was done and told me I needed to lay flat on my back for 15 minutes and I would feel relief in just a few minutes. The nurse started to lower the bed and as I laid down I was like "oh my God, oh my God" and freaked out both the nurse and anesthesiologist. They both were like "what's the problem!?" and I was like I've got to push! My doctor came around the corner with her gloves on and check me and said "oh ya, she's complete". My nurse looked at the anesthesiologist and said I've got to put her up a bit and he threw his hands up, shook his head and walked out of the room. I pushed through about three contractions and a few minutes later Austin was born at 6:46pm. I wasn't sure how much the epidural numbed the pushing experience for Jacob and Brody since I was still able to feel a lot with their births, but it was a different experience for Austin. In a good way, I could really tell the progress that I was making when I was pushing but also in a bad way because it hurt so much that I kept pushing even without the contractions just to get it over with. It's amazing how soon after you deliver how the pain subsides. Initially after he was born felt my stomach and had normal sensation so I thought that they didn't even turn my epidural on, but after another 10 minutes I realized my stomach was a little numb, so it wasn't a total loss because it did help out for delivering the placenta, stitching up my 2nd degree tear and those post-baby contractions that help shrink the uterus. The hospital is so wonderful and places the baby right on your chest until you give the word that they can begin their work up on him (measurements and all). So we just snuggled him for awhile and Aaron cut the cord. The doctors and nurses commented on Austin being a big boy and I thought he looked like my smallest baby! Austin's nurse then cleaned him up and did his measurements and informed me that my little guy weighed 9lbs 4oz and was 20.25" long! Not bad for being born at 39w1d! My doctor joked that she should have prescribed smoking in the first trimester since I make big babies ;) Austin scored 8 and 9 on his APGAR and was a bit bruised up from his quick delivery including bruises on his head and two on his arms. In addition he had a broken blood vessel in both eyes as a result of his birth that they said will clear up in a few days/weeks. Dr. Myers also informed me that Austin made his way through the birth canal with one arm up by his face - nice, thanks Austin! The nurse let me know that it was hospital policy to check the blood sugar of any large or small for dates babies every hour for 4-5hrs and that it needed to stay above 40 I believe before they recommended giving the baby sugar water or something. Thankfully Austin's lowest number was 57, although they encouraged breastfeeding to help keep it up. My sleepy little guy wasn't too hungry, but eventually he latched on. The first night went really well and Austin slept pretty well for us. Austin did great at his 24hr exam, too. He had a jaundice reading of 8.5 so they took a blood serum to get a more accurate reading and that came back at 6.0 so we are mostly in the clear there. His weight had dropped to 8lbs 13oz, which wasn't too bad either. Austin has great head and neck control for a newborn, just as Jacob did, which Aaron in particular is very grateful for! We thought Austin might have some bad acid reflux (also like Jacob) because when we were in the hospital he threw up about three times, but since being home we have not had any problems so I (knock on wood) think we are in the clear with that too! Aaron and I are so unbelievably thankful that we have been so blessed with three healthy, beautiful children.

Grandma and Grandpa brought Jacob and Brody to meet their new brother the day after his birth. Both boys were initially very curious and interested, but after 10 seconds they became equally interested with the tv. And the bed. And the nurses curtain. And the nightlight. Brody also thought Austin's bassinet was awesome and tried to climb right in.

Our adjustment home has gone really well. Austin is a great baby and so content. Jacob has totally taken me by surprise with how interested he is in baby Austin. He asks to hold him at least six times a day and then will sit there with him for 15- 20 minutes! Jacob is super gentle and helpful. Brody is a little young to understand the true meaning of gentle. He says "Gentle" as he attempts to swat Austin's head or poke his eyes. But in general, I think he really likes Austin and he loves saying "baby!".

Monday we had Austin's newborn exam at the pediatrician and he is already back up to 9lbs 1.4oz. He's looking a little yellow, but nothing too concerning just something we'll keep an eye on over the next week. Provided his coloring improves, we don't need to return until February!

PS - Way to go Amy on the baby pool! I fully concur with your suggested prize ;)

Comparisons

Jacob
5/20/06 @ 23:49 (11:49pm)
8lbs, 8oz
21.5inches
head - 13.5"
chest - 14"

Brody
3/26/08 @ 18:11 (6:11pm)
8lbs, 11oz
21.5 inches (although we have another document that shows 20.5... we will have to see what the peds records from the hospital say, I guess)
head - 14.5"
chest - 13.5"

Austin
12/30/09 @ 18:46 (6:46pm)
9lbs, 4oz
20.25 inches
head - 14"
chest - 14.25"

So Brody had the biggest head (surprise, surprise!), Austin had the biggest chest and weight and Jacob (our shorty) was most likely the longest (still have conflicting records on Brody's initial length).

I think Austin looks most like Jacob, but he definitely has Brody's chin and of course, has his own look overall.

Happy New Year!

We're home and our family is complete, what a way to start a new year :) Our hospital stay went really well, everybody there was so nice. Austin had to endure a bunch of heel pokes the first few hours after he was born to check the status of his blood sugar, I guess it can be a problem with 9lbs (or larger) babies, although gestational diabetes was never a concern for me. Thankfully they all came back over the 40 cutoff. Our first night went great, Austin slept a ton and our second night was so-so. Austin was up nursing quite a bit from midnight till 4 (way to ring in the new year!) and at that point the nurse brought me a pacifier to try to help the situation. He took the pacifier for about 30 minutes and then was only content sleeping on my chest. So that is what we did and I was able to sleep until 8am when his pediatrician came to get him for his circumcision. I jumped in the shower quickly while he was gone and was out in time to nurse him. So far his circ looks good and he has been sleeping most of the day (yes, I am nervous about tonight!). They didn't do a weight check when we left the hospital but at his 24hr exam he weighed 8lbs 13oz. Oh, and his bili count for jaundice came back at 6.0 so everything looks good there so far! I'm feeling really good for the most part, but the Tylenol and Motrin do help with the cramping, especially when I'm nursing.

The boys did great for mom, yeah! They are both pretty excited about their new brother. Jacob LOVES him and wants to hold him and kiss him all the time. He is great with Austin. Brody on the other hand... a nightmare. He is just way too rough and interested. I have a new appreciation for Jacob's lack of interest in Brody when we first brought Brody home from the hospital. I'm not sure how things are going to go over when Aaron has to go back to work because it's a challenge with even two of us at the moment. I'm sure we'll find a groove eventually but right now I'm so worried that Austin is going to get hurt.

Thanks to everyone for all the love and support!! And Happy 2010!!!
