Jacob's First Day of School

The day I have been dreading has arrived.  My little guy started Kindergarten.  I think we were fairly well prepared for it.  We had visited the school a few times to play at the playground and look in the windows.  Then when we received our teacher assignment (thankfully the teacher I really wanted!), I emailed her and asked if we could stop in to see the classroom.  During our visit, I walked Jacob through the school and we dropped off some donated supplies.  Up until last week Jacob was adamant that he would not ride the bus but then our friendly bus driver stopped by to check out the route and gave Jacob a chance to check out the bus and get to know him a bit.  After that, Jacob felt a lot more comfortable and agreed to ride the bus.

On Tuesday morning, I woke my little sleepy head bright and early and he seemed excited but quiet.  We were both very surprised when the bus driver stopped to pick him up 14 minutes ahead of the time we had originally been given!  Jacob walked very slowly to the bus and then willingly got right on!  There were two older kids that were really excited to see him and show him where to sit and where to find the bus number.  I took my picture, crossed the road, waved and then once I was sure he was out of sight I cried :(  I was surprised that Brody wasn't sad that Jacob was taking off without him, but when we went inside he informed me that Mr. Art (the bus driver) would be driving him to his school soon as well.  Thankfully Brody must have later forgotten, so we didn't have to deal with too much disappointment!

Aaron told me to pull myself together so we could drive to the school and meet him off the bus.  The funny thing about how Aaron and I handle stress - I get emotional and he gets anxious and wants to hurryupandwait.  We arrived at the school and watched our little guy get off the bus.  There appeared to be an older girl who took Jacob and another little girl under her wing.  She was being so protective that she didn't even want Jacob to walk away from her to come over to me!  Jacob told me he enjoyed the bus ride and said it went FAST, "Even faster than you drive, mom!" but that he wanted to ride with me to and from school from now on.

I took Jacob in to his classroom and he and Brody started playing with a puzzle a bit.  When it reached 9am (school starts at 9:10), Brody and I said goodbye and were able to walk out without a tear shed by anyone (I was able to make it home before I started crying again...).

I picked him up from school at 4pm and when I peeked in the window things seemed to be going great for Jacob and the whole class.  The teacher lined the kids up and brought them out of the room and the interrogation began ;)  Jacob said he had a good day but that his stomach hurt when he started missing mommy after lunch, when they wanted the kids to lay down.  He said he actually ate his lunch (wow!) of chicken nuggets and chocolate milk, but he didn't like the green beans.  He had a lot of fun at recess, but the slides were still wet so they couldn't go down them.  (It was 42 degrees when I dropped him off, so I'm sure it was from the frost).  His favorite part of the day was when they went over the whole alphabet, but the letter "I" was missing so they searched everywhere for it and finally found it in a special package!  Oh, and he also made one friend that he likes a lot, but he could not remember her name ;)

So overall, I think it was a pretty good day for everyone!  I was a little surprised they offer a nap time and can only imagine what Jacob was thinking since he hasn't had a nap in years!  I stopped by the office today to figure out how to pay for school lunch and when I informed the secretary who my son was she replied "Ohhhh, Jacob!  I got to know Jacob a bit yesterday!"  And then I learned that the teacher had taken him to the office when his belly was hurting and he hung out with her a bit and she "may have given him a skittle or two".  So, why do I have a feeling Jacob has learned that the office is a pretty cool place to go?!  Ah well, I'm glad she took care of him, just hoping he doesn't think nap time means it's time for him to go get a treat from the office!

I drove Jacob to school today and he seemed in good spirits.  Our bus driver comes right in front of the house which is awfully convenient, but I'm already really uncomfortable with this FULL day kindergarten (9am to 4pm) that I have no problem cutting out the bus to spend some extra time with him.  (If he rides the bus he leaves at 8:05am and returns at 5:00pm).

Tomorrow is the open house and then Friday he has a half day!  Brody starts school on the 23rd!
